Del Mar Yearling Sale Set for Aug. 16

ARCADIA, Calif. (Dec. 19, 2003) -- The Del Mar Yearling Sale will be held Monday, Aug. 16, 2004, kicking off Pacific Classic week.

The California Thoroughbred Breeders Association will hold the sale on one day only with a smaller selection of yearlings offered.

"The goal of the Del Mar sale, for the last nine or 10 years, has been to provide a venue for breeders in California to showcase their top yearlings," said Doug Burge, CTBA's executive vice president and general manager. "But in reviewing the 2003 sale -- both the results as well as the horses catalogued -- it was evident that there was not as much consistency in regards to quality as there had been in the past."

Burge said there is a possibility that the sale might return to the Del Mar racetrack. It has been held at the nearby Del Mar HorsePark since 1996.
